The San Jose Earthquakes, an American professional soccer team based in San Jose, California, that participate in Major League Soccer (MLS), has announced that it will be accepting Bitcoin for the upcoming soccer season. The announcement has been confirmed by Dave Kaval, President of the San Jose Earthquakes.
Dave Kaval said that his team will be accepting Bitcoin with the upcoming soccer season and helping out the fans spend their Bitcoins for anything from the merchandise store as well as tickets to see games. The huge fan base that the San Jose Earthquakes has is extremely happy about the latest decision on the part of the club.
This is the second professional sports club which has announced that it is going to accept the digital currency. Earlier, Sacramento Kings (an NBA team) announced that March 1st would mark their acceptance of Bitcoins. The decision on the part of San Jose Earthquakes will encourage other sporting clubs to open themselves for the revolutionary currency.
Dave Kaval said that in May, his organization is actually taking Bitcoin in its stadium for merchandise–hopefully for concessions as well–but definitely for merchandise. He hoped that to create a really seamless experience as his organization can, the decision to embrace the revolutionary invention is an outright good development.
BitPay Will be the Official Payment Processor
Mr. Kaval said that he wants to produce a seamless commerce experience with customers’ mobile. Mobile phones are becoming useful tools for millions of people and he hopes that mobile fans could use something like Passbook with Apple and just have the system recognize their access as they approach the doors and let them in.
Reports are ripe that if a POS system can be worked out and launched in time for fans, Bitcoin is planned for merchandizing and tickets and possibly even concessions. Though there are various options, the sporting club entered into an agreement with highly promoted BTC payment processor BitPay, it will work as the Quakes’ payment gateway.
Answering to the question why Mr. Kaval went with BitPay, he said that it came down to professionalism and a good product. He opined that his club took its time and did the required due diligence and came to the conclusion that BitPay is the organization with the most robust solutions.
