Newsweek’s Alleged Bitcoin Creator Thanks Supporters, Dismisses Founder Claims

The man Newsweek magazine claimed to be the founder of bitcoin posted a video on YouTube, in which he thanks supporters and dismisses claims he created the virtual currency.

Dorian Satoshi Nakamoto refuted the magazine’s allegation in the video that was posted on Tuesday and thanked thousands of supporters who gave him money to clear his name.

“I’m very thankful for you, all these people, in US, Europe and Asia and Africa and South America who supported me throughout. I want to hug you, this 2,000 of you, who donated. I’m very happy, each one gives me a tick in my heart,” he’s quoted by The Guardian as saying.

His English broke occasionally as he spoke and held up a copy of the Newsweek issue of March 6, which described him as “The face behind bitcoin.”

The three-minute video brought Nakamoto back to the limelight about 30 days after the cover story created media spectacle over his simple home in Temple City.

According to PCWorld, the 64-year old man featured in the video Andreas Antonopoulos of Blockchain, a bitcoin wallet company. The firm’s security official was behind Nakamoto’s online fundraiser in March.

The Japanese-American retired engineer denied any association with bitcoin and said he heard of the virtual currency for the first time in February 2014 via Goodman’s inquiries.

Newsweek has stood by its story despite being criticized for erring and subjecting a poor innocent man to the unfavorable ordeal. Nakamoto said he was jobless and sick.

In the You Tube video, Nakamoto says he’s not Satoshi Nakamoto. He adds that his real names are Dorian Satoshi Nakamoto, which he would not use if he were the founder of bitcoin.

The fundraiser towards helping Nakamoto has generated bitcoins valued at 23,000 US dollars.

Goodman was not available for immediate comments on the developments. To register for a free 2-week subscription to ForexMinute Premium Plan, visit www.forexminute.com/newsletter.
