Anti-Fracking Activists Gather in Lancashire to Conduct Awareness, EU forms Fracking CommissionAnti-fracking campaigners drawn from all corners of Lancashire gathered at the Preston Flag Market for the awareness raising day.

The Frack Free Lancashire movement, which is composed of 17 groups draw from the county, talked with members of the public, giving out information, reported The Gazette.

“We’ve had great support from residents across Lancashire against the fracking plans,” said Ebony Johnson, the spokesperson for Frack Free Lancashire.

Central Lancashire Friends of the Earth advocated for councils to ban fracking and instead resort to greener energy sources such as wind or solar power.

In a separate report, the European Commission yesterday created the European Science and Technology Network on Unconventional Hydrocarbon Extraction that is mandated with evaluating test wells, review the technology used and establish whether fracking should be allowed in Europe.

The network has been established at a time when various European countries have adopted differing stance on fracking or hydraulic fracturing. Seventeen nations have given out licenses while 5 of them have prohibited it, including France.

Most European countries rely on Russia for most of their natural gas imports. However, the recent Ukraine crisis highlighted the need to look for alternative gas supplies after Russia threatened to cut off supplies to some countries that opposed its interference in the former Soviet state.

The network will bring “together practitioners from industry, research, academia as well as civil society. The Network will collect, analyse and review results from exploration projects as well as assess the development of technologies used in unconventional gas and oil projects.”

The network will study the U.S. fracking industry in order to make recommendations to the EU and the member states to help them decide whether to authorize fracking or not. To register for a free 2-week subscription to ForexMinute Premium Plan, visit www.forexminute.com/newsletter.
